The adoration in the air was unbearable. The atmosphere screamed blissfully as two kids ran up and down sunny lane. Felicity overflowed the quiet streets. Beams of light healed broken hearts and soggy eyes. Mom and Dad followed, zealously.
“Kids slow down!” Mom exclaimed, smoothly rubbing her tummy. She was 7 months pregnant.
“How goes it with... the nanny?” asked Dad, stroking her hair.
“Karen? Not bad. She’s taking good care of the kids”
“And you?”
“And me” She remarked, smiling anxiously.
“What’s the matter?” asked Dad, noticing Mom’s pale cheeks.
“Oh it’s nothing, just a slight stomach-ache. I’ll be fine”
“You need to rest then – c’mon, we’ll go back” Dad insisted.
“No it’s fine... I’d rather be out here, with you and the kids. Open-air is just what I need”
Dad wrapped his arms around mom.
“Darling, I love you no matter what” he whispered.
Mom smiled, “I love you too”
The kids paused suddenly when they came across a basketball court. They ran back to their father yelling “Daddy!”
Tommy, the youngest child, held a basketball in his other hand, “Dad, Will you teach us how to play basketball?” he asked.
Dad felt joyful tears slither down his cheeks as he remembered his childhood.
“With pleasure” he said, smiling humbly.
He walked up to the middle of the court leaving everyone behind, suddenly his whole face lit up. The innocence of youth loomed to Dad as he remembered his favorite sport. He stood singly facing the basket, with the ball compressed in the palm of his hand.
Unexpectedly, Mom collapsed, grasping onto Tommy’s woolen sweater.
“Mommy!” He yelled in anguish.
Dad dropped the ball instantly and ran towards them. He saw his wife on the floor, grasping for breath, coughing spasmodically. It was agonizing to watch. He dashed towards her and carefully picked her up.
“Kids go back to the house… Now!” he insisted, trying to hold back his tears.
“Eleanor… listen to me, everything’s going to be alright, okay? Honey look at me!” He said apprehensively, dialing 911.
“It hurts” she whispered, in pain.
“Don’t worry; the paramedics are on their way here. Everything is going to be okay!”
“If our baby makes it and I don’t, promise to give this to her” she said, handing him her violet bracelet.
“Don’t say that… Stop! Just… stop. I said everything is going to be okay”
“Ok but if it isn’t I want our child to be able to remember me, It’s just in case”
“Our child isn’t going to have to remember you!” He paused. “Our child’s going to know you”
