Happiness — we've all felt it from time but have we truly comprehended its concept, its rationale or its meaning? From my understanding, Happiness lives within each and every one of us and develops our state of mind by capturing a huge variety of positive and blissful emotions. If someone asked me to list down things that made me happy, it would probably be...
If someone asked me to list down things that made me happy, it would probably be an endless list; volunteering, sleeping for long hours, shopping, travelling, watching Leonardo Di Caprio movies, laughing, writing short stories, decorating my journal, playing cards, hanging out with my closest friends and so forth. Yet, I still explore ways and means towards greater happiness and satisfaction. I have achieved countless things over the past few years that have given me more contentment than I can imagine. For instance, I designed a website for the Indian Embassy a few months ago and what started out as ordinary class work turned into what seemed like a phenomenon in my academic career.
If you don’t already know, I am obsessed with India and its fascinating culture. This website changed my life; it had me networking well with everyone in the Indian embassy and it brought genuine happiness to my life. With a clear state of mind and positive outlook of things, I have been able to nourish my inner thoughts and enlighten my understanding of life as it is.
French novelist Gustave Flaubert once wrote: “To be stupid, selfish, and have good health are three requirements for happiness, although if stupidity is lacking, all is lost.” Recent research however, has proven this idea to be nothing but a myth. British author William Hazlitt wrote about Happiness: “Look up, laugh loud, talk big, keep the color in your cheek and the fire in your eye, adorn your person, and maintain your health and beauty”. I agree with him, do you?
Happiness is something vital in life that we all seek every minute because it makes us feel way too good about ourselves. We shouldn’t underestimate how far some people are willing to go to acquire happiness. And why wouldn’t they? Happiness brings with it a handful of delight. The countless benefits have us wanting more each time.
In my head right now, I have a mental portrait of someone taking a pill every time they feel low or depressed. Now this pill lasts for a short period but in that period has the power to fully eradicate our day-to-day predicaments and give us a sense of belonging and success. The person takes this pill every time they have a desire – it strengthens their state of mind and blinds them from all the evil out there, even it’s for a minute. When they run out of this pill, they become unhappy. Nevertheless, they want more, like a drug, they’re addicted. What I’m trying to say is – everyone is an addict of success and genuine happiness, as well as a victim of sorrow. It doesn't take scientific research or religious theorists to prove it.
We are all selfish beings; we do things and befriend people because it contributes to our happiness. However, it leads to good things so we all need to take the pill once in a while. Happiness is a moment in our life which comes and goes; you can’t expect it to last forever, you just have to enjoy it while it lasts. It’s beautiful in the mind and sacred to our soul so if we condemn the evil within us and value the good in life; who knows, perhaps there might be enough pills left for all of us! =]
